Newcastle United are interested in signing Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing, who is currently on loan at Bolton Wanderers, according to The Guardian.
The diminutive midfielder was last week crowned the Championship side’s Player of the Season and with only a year left on his contract is expected to leave Liverpool this summer.
Spearing, 24, is actually back on Merseyside and receiving treatment for a broken toe at Melwood, but could feature for The Trotters again should they make the play-off final.
Dougie Freedman’s side go into the final day of the season on Saturday in sixth place but level on points Nottingham Forest.
The Guardian report:
Newcastle United are closely monitoring Jay Spearing’s potential availability at Liverpool and considering bidding for the midfielder as long as the slump that has taken Alan Pardew’s team to one place above the relegation zone does not get any worse and sends them into the Championship.
Spearing, along with other fringe players is likely to depart Anfield this summer as Brendan Rodgers looks to trim the squad and bring in quality players.
Spearing’s form for Bolton this season means there is likely to be plenty of interest for him this summer.
