Brendan Rodgers faced a room full of world and local press in Jakarta on Thursday ahed of Liverpool’s pre-season friendly against an Indonesia XI this Saturday.
The Reds flew in to the Indonesian capital earlier this week and have been training in heat of almost 40°C.
Rodgers answered questions on the club’s plans for the 2013/14 season, as well as saying that he believes Luis Suarez will be a Liverpool player next season, amid speculation linking the Uruguayan to an Anfield exit.
Rodgers also spoke of his longing to qualify for the Champions League by finishing in the top four when the new Premier League season gets underway next month.
He told journalists, “The Champions League is a competition we’re fighting to get in.
“The great name of Liverpool as a club and the history of the club dictate that we should be in that competition. There’s no other measure for us.
“The challenge is very, very difficult because of the competitors now in England. We have to continue to fight – and I believe we can put up a great fight this year.
“It was very difficult for us last season with a new infrastructure and a new way of working and playing, but I believe this season we can put up a great fight. Let’s hope we can get back to where the club belongs.”
Liverpool vs Indonesia XI gets underway at 2.30pm UK time (8.30pm local time, Indonesia) on Saturday, 20th July 2013.
