Lazar Markovic injury update

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says he doesn’t expect new signing Lazar Markovic to be sidelined for long, with the new Premier League season fast approaching.

However, the Northern Irish manager did warn that the Serbian international could miss the Reds’ first game of the 2014/15 campaign.

Markovic missed out on making his Anfield debut on Sunday, watching on from the Main Stand as Liverpool beat Borussia Dortmund convincingly in their final pre-season friendly of the summer.

The 20-year-old now faces a race against time to be fit in time to face Southampton at Anfield on Sunday, 17th August, though a place in the starting line-up now seems unlikely.

Rodgers is quoted in the Liverpool Echo as saying on Sunday evening, “Hopefully, Lazar will be available. If not for Sunday, certainly for the next week.

“He’s had a slight problem with his tendon, but he’s up to speed, working with the sports science team and looking very strong. And if he just misses out next week, he’ll certainly be available for the next game.”

The Reds visit Manchester City in their second game of the season on Monday, 25th August and Rodgers will be hoping he has all his options available for the clash against the reigning Premier League champions.

Liverpool may not need to worry too much though if Sunday’s performance against Dortmund is anything to go by.

Rodgers’ side looked in good shape and impressive, sweeping waves of attacking football towards the Kop, reminiscent of the sensational form of last season.

Daniel Sturridge and debutant Dejan Lovren scored in the first-half, before Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson made if four after the break.
