The Croatian international defender lines up against his former club, whilst fellow ex-Saint Rickie Lambert starts on the bench.

Lovren made a goalscoring start to his Reds career last Sunday, scoring Liverpool’s second in a 4-0 pre-season friendly win over Borussia Dortmund.

On-loan full-back Javier Manquillo so makes his full debut for the club.

Lucas is preferred to Emre Can and Joe Allen in midfield.

New signing Alberto Moreno is ineligible to play as his paperwork was not completed in time, whilst injury forces Adam Lallana, Jon Flanagan, Daniel Agger and Lazar Markovic out of the game.

Liverpool: Mignolet, Manquillo, Johnson, Skrtel, Lovren, Gerrard, Lucas, Henderson, Coutinho, Sterling, Sturridge.

Substitutes: Jones, Toure, Sakho, Allen, Ibe, Can, Lambert.

Liverpool v Southampton gets underway at 1.30pm and is live on Sky Sports 1 in the UK. Follow @thisisanfield for updates and photos from Anfield.
