Rumour Mill: Liverpool make bid for Atalanta full-back Davide Zappacosta

Reports in Italy suggest Liverpool have made a bid for Atalanta full-back Davide Zappacosta, as Brendan Rodgers continues to look to strengthen his squad.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, admittedly far from the most reliable European source around, the Reds have made an offer for the 23-year-old right-back.

Having impressed for relegation-threatened Atalanta in Serie A last season, he also performed well in an ultimately doomed European Championship campaign for Italy’s U21s in Czech Republic. The Azzurri are already out, having exited at the group stage.

Liverpool have reportedly been monitoring Zappacosta for a year or so, as Rodgers looks for reinforcements in an area currently light on quality.

Nathaniel Clyne‘s arrival is a terrific piece of business, but with Glen Johnson having left, Javier Manquillo rumoured to be leaving too and Jon Flanagan injured, a back-up right-back may well be needed.

Zappacosta scored three goals in 29 appearances for Atalanta in 2014/15, having spent three years on loan at Avellino.

Tottenham and Torino are also interested in acquiring his signature, but he remains an unknown quantity to many. Take the rumour with a pinch of salt.
