Joe Gomez ruled out for up to 9 months with ACL injury

Liverpool have been dealt a major blow with the news that defender Joe Gomez has suffered a suspected torn ACL.

The 18-year-old suffered the injury on international duty this week, limping off with a knee injury in the latter stages of England under-21s match against Kazakhstan on Wednesday.

U21s boss Gareth Southgate said post-match that he hoped it was nothing serious.

It’s a major blow for Liverpool, with the club short of cover at both left and right back.

Gomez started the season at left back ahead of Alberto Moreno but the Spaniard will now become the regular under Jurgen Klopp.

With Jon Flanagan still sidelined too, there’s also little cover for Nathaniel Clyne at right back.

Gomez’s injury and Klopp’s arrival could pave the way for Jose Enrique at the club.

Gomez joins Jordan Henderson and Christian Benteke on the sidelines.

The Echo report tonight that “Scan results suggest there is extensive damage to his ACL and if confirmed he will be facing between six and nine months on the sidelines.”

The former Charlton youngster has likely played his last game this season.
