Liverpool favourites to sign £5m Leicester left-back

Liverpool are reportedly favourites to complete the summer signing of highly-rated Leicester City youngster Ben Chilwell.

The 19-year-old left-back has been a rumoured target for the Reds for a while now, and it appears that they are confident of getting their man.

Liverpool rate Chilwell at £5million, although it is believed newly-crowned Premier League champions Leicester will demand more for his signature. A fee in the region of £8million seems more likely.

Chilwell is “open to the idea of moving to Anfield”, according to Neil Jones of the Liverpool Echo, despite Arsenal also being interested in acquiring the services of the England U20 international.

Goal’s Melissa Reddy claims that the youngster “is enthused by the impact Jurgen Klopp has already made on Merseyside”, which is seemingly a key reason for Liverpool being top of his list.

The club are thought to have lined up a list of alternatives, should they fail to get their man, but his impressive performances during a loan spell with Huddersfield Town earlier this season caught the eye – with Klopp’s friend David Wanger, the Yorkshire side’s boss, providing a glowing reference to the Reds.

Chilwell made his Leicester debut in a League Cup clash with Hull City back in October, and has also appeared in the FA Cup for the Foxes this season.

He has failed to oust Christian Fuchs as Leicester‘s first-choice left-back in the Premier League, however, but a move to Anfield would see him compete with Alberto Moreno for the left-back spot.

Seen as a “natural leader” with “good close control and positional intelligence”, Chilwell is someone with a big future ahead of him.

With left-back an area of the pitch where Liverpool clearly need to strengthen in, it would be encouraging to see a deal completed sooner rather than later.
