Liverpool are in pre-season action against Huddersfield Town tonight (7.45pm kickoff), with Jurgen Klopp naming a makeshift lineup.

The two sides will take to the John Smith’s Stadium to compete for the Shankly Trophy, with Klopp facing up against his close friend, David Wagner.

With injuries to defenders Joel Matip, Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez, Klopp has been forced to name an experimental starting lineup.

Summer signing Loris Karius continues in goal, behind a back four of Connor Randall, Lucas Leiva, Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno.

Promising midfielder Cameron Brannagan is also unavailable with a slight hamstring problem, but the return of Marko Grujic from illness sees the Serbian start alongside Kevin Stewart.

With Klopp close to being able to name his strongest possible forward line, academy youngster Ovie Ejaria joins Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino in what is likely to be a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Eighteen-year-old goalkeeper Shamal George keeps his place on the substitutes’ bench, with Adam Bogdan joining Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan on Wednesday afternoon.

Alongside George are Andre Wisdom, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ryan Kent, Lazar Markovic, Ben Woodburn and Danny Ings.

New signing Ragnar Klavan misses out, having not yet trained with Klopp’s squad following his £4.2 million move from Augsburg.

Liverpool XI vs. Huddersfield Town: Karius; Randall, Lucas, Lovren, Moreno; Stewart, Grujic; Mane, Ejaria, Coutinho; Firmino
