Scottish giants Celtic are believed to be pushing for a deal to sign surplus Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom this summer.
The 23-year-old featured extensively throughout the Reds’ pre-season schedule, but has since dropped back down the defensive pecking order, despite Jurgen Klopp‘s issues at centre-back.
With Mamadou Sakho, Lucas Leiva and Joe Gomez all injured for much of 2016/17 so far, and both Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip struggling with minor issues, Wisdom has remained out of Klopp’s matchday squad for Liverpool’s first four games of the campaign.
Having struggled to establish himself on Merseyside in recent years, not aided by failed loan spells with West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City, Wisdom is set to leave the club this summer.
According to the Liverpool Echo, Celtic are “favourites” to secure a deal to bring Wisdom to Glasgow.
Liverpool are receptive to bids, and are awaiting a “suitable offer” from the Scottish side, now managed by Brendan Rodgers.
Rodgers gave Wisdom his Reds debut in 2012, and though it was the Ulsterman who sanctioned temporary spells at The Hawthorns and Carrow Road, is adjusting to a different level at Celtic.
Having already signed Kolo Toure on a free transfer, Wisdom would provide Rodgers with another solid solution in defence.
Able to operate both at centre-back and right-back, this flexibility could prove invaluable, and Rodgers needs to flesh out his squad having secured qualification for this season’s Champions League.
A change of scenery would be a boost for Wisdom, as well as turning out for a manager with a clear faith in his abilities.
He could provide the Bhoys with a replacement for Efe Ambrose, with the Nigerian linked with a move away from Celtic Park this summer.
Wisdom is likely to be followed through the Anfield exit by Mario Balotelli, Lazar Markovic, Luis Alberto and Tiago Ilori, as Klopp’s summer overhaul continues.
