New series: TIA on Football Manager—with the fans in control!

Liverpool were close to having an incredible 2016/17 season, before injuries and absences hampered an unlikely title charge. Now the fans get to go one better—and collectively direct the Reds to glory.

The Reds were enjoying a good run in the Premier League up until January, when absences struck and results took a turn for the worse, culminating in two cup exits and a slide down the league table.

Many fans pointed to the team’s lack of signings in January as a big reason for being unable to sustain a title challenge, though the Reds did eventually recover to finish fourth and secure Champions League football next season.

Hindsight is a wonderful tool for getting arguments right and seeing where teams should have done better across the course of the season, but it rarely has a practical use in football—until now.

Starting on Tuesday, This Is Anfield are launching an interactive campaign to put things right: Taking control of Liverpool on Football Manager, with you, the fans, making the big calls.

A new series on the site will see us replay the 16/17 campaign, attempting to better what Jurgen Klopp and his side achieved—thanks to the decisions taken along the way by the supporters.

Each week we’ll play through a month of the campaign and questions will be put to supporters—by way of polls on Twitter—as to the direction the team should take. The most popular response will be taken in-game, from the first day of pre-season to the final game of the campaign.

Should Loris Karius or Simon Mignolet be No. 1? How prominent a role should Daniel Sturridge play? Is a left-back a bigger priority or another winger? What formation should be played?

All these, and more, are up to you. Follow @ThisIsAnfield on Twitter and get involved, and help the Reds correct the errors of last season!
