Liverpool Ladies manager Scott Rogers previews Sunday’s Continental Cup clash with Durham Women and reflects on a positive start to the WSL 1 season.
The Reds currently sit in fifth place in the league table after picking up two wins from their first four games.
It’s not been the perfect start for Rogers and his side but he has been encouraged by Liverpool’s performances and they have scored 10 goals in their last two games.
“The only game we haven’t performed well in so far was the game against Reading. It was just one of those days,” Rogers told This Is Anfield.
“The Reading game aside, I think we have played well. We could have got a result against Chelsea had things gone our way on another day.”
Liverpool’s next test is against Durham on Sunday in the Continental Cup and Rogers hinted there could be a few changes to the starting XI.
“We have good competition for places in the squad. What is important is the young players are performing well too,” said Rogers.
“We want to take the cup seriously so we will of course name a strong side that we feel are capable of winning the game.
“But we have decisions to make. We have a really good squad and it’s up to the players to make the decisions tough and they have been doing that. It’s a good thing for a manager.”
The Reds will go into the game in good form after beating Sunderland 4-1 in their last match in the Women’s Super League.
Rogers is keen to build winning momentum as Liverpool will search for their third successive victory on Sunday.
Asked whether the cup competition would be a welcome distraction from the league, Rogers simply replied “there was no issue.”
“We have prepared for this game the exact same way we do for every game,” said Rogers.
“We are treating Durham with the same respect. It’s about making sure we prepare the right way and turn up at our best on the day.
“It will be tough but we believe we are strong enough to beat any opposition.
“Obviously we played Sunderland in the league the other day and we got a result and returned to winning ways.
“I still believe the league won’t start to take shape until after Christmas so it is not a case of us ‘taking a break’ from the competition.
“There is no issue. Birmingham will be a tough game in the league coming up but we have to focus on Durham first. That is the next big game for us.”
Liverpool Ladies take on Durham on Sunday at 12pm (GMT) at New Ferens Park.
