Liverpool ladies’ Casey Stoney signs off in style with victory

Liverpool Ladies’ Casey Stoney ended her playing career on a winning note as Liverpool defeated Sunderland 3-1 to climb to third in the Super League table.

The former England captain, who will begin a coaching career with the England team, saw Jess Clarke score twice and Bethany England once, while Dominique Bruinenberg netted for Sunderland.

It was a return to winning ways for Liverpool, who had been well beaten by Arsenal and Manchester City in their previous two games.

Chelsea took over at the top of the table after they beat pointless Yeovil and Manchester City surprisingly lost to Birmingham.

Fran Kirby put Chelsea ahead after 63 minutes and an own goal from Hannah Miles three minutes later sealed their 2-0 victory. It was the same score at Birmingham, where a double from Ellen White earned the fifth-placed side the points.

On a good night for England’s attacking players, Fara Williams scored two brilliant long-range goals in Reading’s 4-0 victory over Bristol City. Kirsty Pearce and Brooke Chaplen were the other scorers.
