Liverpool suffer major injury blow with Joel Matip set for surgery

Liverpool have been dealt a major blow as centre-back Joel Matip is due to undergo surgery on a thigh injury that will rule him out for the season.

The 26-year-old played the full 90 minutes in Saturday’s 2-1 win away to Crystal Palace, but is now facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

According to LiverpoolFC.com, Matip suffered the injury during that victory at Selhurst Park, despite remaining on the field throughout.

Now surgery is set to keep him out for the remainder of the campaign, in a bitter setback for Jurgen Klopp as he plans for the biggest games of Liverpool’s season.

This comes on the eve of the Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash with Man City, with a trip to take on Everton in the Premier League to come on Saturday.

The Reds will then visit the Etihad for the second leg of their European knockout tie next Tuesday, with Klopp short of defensive options.

Dejan Lovren is now set to partner Virgil van Dijk at the back at Anfield, with Ragnar Klavan the only other fit centre-back.

Joe Gomez (ankle) is currently out, along with both Emre Can (back) and Adam Lallana (hamstring).
