Liverpool to face Wolves in FA Cup 3rd round

Liverpool have been drawn to play away against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup third round.

The Reds will travel to Molineux on Sunday, January 6 or Monday, January 7 – due to being in action against Man City on January 3.

Liverpool will be looking to fare somewhat better in the new year than they did in the League Cup earlier this term, as they suffered an early exit to Chelsea.

Indeed, domestic cup competitions have not shown the best of Jurgen Klopp‘s team of late.

Last season, the Reds were knocked out on home soil by West Brom in the fourth round, while they also exited at the same stage in 2016/17 and 2015/16.

Indeed, that exit in 16/17 was at the hands of Wolves, with a 2-1 reversal at Anfield something of a shock result against a then-Championship side.

With the Midlands club now in the Premier League, Liverpool will get an early taste of what to expect in the FA Cup when the two teams face off in the top flight on December 21, also at Molineux.

Klopp will face a big decision early in the new year over how best to rotate his side, with the Reds now set to start 2019 with three successive away matches.

They face a huge league clash at Man City on January 3 as well as another Premier League game away at Brighton the weekend after the FA Cup tie.

The last time Liverpool reached the FA Cup final was in 11/12, when they were runners-up to Chelsea, and last lifted the trophy itself in 05/06, beating West Ham in the final.

In recent seasons, the best impact the Reds have had on the competition was in reaching the semis in 14/15 under Brendan Rodgers.
