Liverpool’s confirmed 29-man squad for “massively important” training camp

Liverpool head to Evian, France on Monday as Jurgen Klopp welcomes back a key quintet of players to almost complete his squad for 2019/20.

Brazilians Alisson and Roberto Firmino, plus Mohamed Salah and the duo of Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri all link up with the squad in southern Spain.

Keita and Shaqiri had missed pre-season until now due to respective injuries, while Alisson, Firmino and Salah are returning late due to international commitments at the Copa America and Africa Cup of Nations.

They add to the squad that had travelled to Edinburgh for Sunday’s friendly against Napoli.

The only player not back yet is Sadio Mane, who will return to training next week but won’t be fit for the season opener against Norwich on August 9.

Cut from the training group that had been in the USA are the trio of Nathaniel Phillips, Curtis Jones and Ben Woodburn, while Ryan Kent is also absent – with the club claiming that’s due to illness.

Kent’s future is unlikely to be at Liverpool next season after Klopp said they would sell the youngster.

Included in the squad is Yasser Larouci, plus fellow young left-back Adam Lewis. Forward Bobby Duncan also remains part of the group.

Teenage signings Sepp van den Berg and Harvey Elliott are included.

Klopp has described this week as “massively important” for the team, especially after some disappointing performances and results in pre-season so far.

Liverpool play French side Lyon in Geneva, Switzerland on Wednesday evening, before Sunday’s curtain-raiser against Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday.

“Of course you would like to get a bit more from training sessions than we got for example from yesterday [vs Napoli], admitted Klopp.

“We play Wednesday the game against Lyon but we have to see how we do that, we organised it months back when we thought ‘OK, they come back, they can maybe play 10, 20, 30 minutes or whatever’.

“We didn’t know in that moment it will be important for Shaq and Naby as well, but apart from that we have to prepare still the season and not only the game on Sunday, but of course the game on Sunday is the first proper game of the new season and so we try to be as good prepared as possible.”
