Liverpool beat Genk 2-1 in the Champions League, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scoring a second-half winner and impressing fans.
Liverpool 2-1 Genk
Champions League, Anfield
November 5, 2019
Goals: Wijnaldum 14′, Oxlade-Chamberlain 53′; Samatta 40′
Jurgen Klopp‘s side were looking for a third successive win in the competition, as the defence of their crown gathers pace.
Gini Wijnaldum flicked the Reds in front with a neat finish after 14 minutes, setting his side on the way to victory.
Mbwana Samatta equalised before half-time, however, capitalising on some poor marking from a corner to stun the Anfield crowd.
Liverpool were back in front when Oxlade-Chamberlain finished clinically in front of the Kop – that’s the way the scoreline stayed.
Napoli’s 1-1 draw at home to Salzburg means the Reds top Group E after four matches, putting them in an excellent position, with Napoli next up in Europe.
Here’s how Liverpool supporters reacted to the result on Twitter, Facebook and This Is Anfield’s forums.
Fans were excited by Oxlade-Chamberlain’s performance…
So, the real fireworks didn’t turn up but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain did. Superb performance, covered so much grass. Can’t do much more to get his place back. Feel his chances of starting vs City have skyrocketed. Salah fairly quiet, but footwork was out of this world. #LFCdigest

Way harder than it needed to be but another big three points at Anfield. Oxlade-Chamberlain the pick of the lot tonight. #LFC pic.twitter.com/l6CgmJMmDI

This is pre-injury Oxlade-Chamberlain. Brilliant to see.

“I sincerely hope Klopp is watching Ox’s contribution tonight and he starts him in midfield against City.” – John Gardner on Facebook.
A lot of things to work on, but job done. Good run out for the likes of Gomez, Ox, Keita and Origi. Ox perhaps the standout performer. Salah frustrating. End product not there at the moment.

There were some concerns about Liverpool’s display, though…
Pretty wasteful, but another 3 points and not too much energy wasted.

That was way more stressful than I expected #LFC

I miss clean sheets.

“Not convincing is an understatement, they had 2 shots and scored with one, the defence is going backwards.” – Jimmy Davies on Facebook.
FT: #LFC 2 Genk 1: The European champions made painfully hard work of that. Oxlade-Chamberlain's second-half strike the difference at Anfield. Samatta had cancelled out Wijnaldum's opener. Scrappy, flat performance but a big step closer to qualification for the last 16.

Not great at all, but it's not like we didn't make opportunities. Feel like the players were all thinking about the City game, which is natural. As much as we hold them to high standards, they're not robots.

Others found positives…
Plenty of good performances in there. Onto the big one on Sunday

Not the most entertaining of games but we got the job done without needing to be at our best, as we have so often recently. Nicely placed in the group now ahead of Napoli’s visit.

“Thought we were great for 75 minutes but we need to put the chances away and that then causes us to get nervous.” – sportbilly1966 on the forums.

Win, key players rested & now top of the group. Happy days #LIVGEN #LFC

Big three points that for #LFC Alot tougher than anticipated but still had the luxury of resting big players. A favourable draw between Napoli and Salzburg means, Liverpool are top of Group E on 9 points.

Mohamed Salah received mixed reviews…
My thoughts:
-Felt like a training match and that we had gears to go through if needed
-Things just aren't clicking for Salah atm
-Origi's best performance when he's started for ages
-Great to have Ox-Chambo back in form
-Sounded like the match was being played in Aleppo— And Could He Play (@andcouldheplay7) November 5, 2019
Salah's movement and ideas are still all there. Always a handful, always dangerous. He's just searching for the precision in his technique that's been missing recently.

Imagine thinking Salah played bad today lmao

Salah unlucky not to get a goal, I thought he was excellent #LIVGEN

Salah nearly back to his best tonight, finishing was a bit poor but some of his build up play was class, constant problem for Genk.
