Liverpool produce unique matchday programme for Leipzig ‘home’ match

You wait 12 years for a game in Budapest and then two come along at once. Not that any of us will be there tonight when Liverpool take on RB Leipzig at Anfield Very East.

It’s been a strange season and as Jordan Henderson puts it in his Official Matchday Programme notes: “Things are even stranger tonight with a ‘home game’ away from Anfield in Europe, a scenario which underlines how serious the situation which forced us into lockdown still is.”

The fact that the Reds are playing a ‘home’ game away from Anfield is also historic. Since Liverpool FC was thankfully formed in 1892, it has never happened before.

Excluding European finals – and there have been plenty of those – this is the 17th game the Redmen have played on neutral soil in Europe, but the first that should have been played at Anfield. Which gave the publishers of Liverpool’s matchday programmes, Reach Sport, a dilemma.

Should we produce a programme for a home game in Hungary that nobody can attend? Or should we stand down our laptops, put our feet up and take it easy? What time is Homes Under the Hammer on again?

All stairs going up to the bedroom joking aside, you can see the answer right here and now we’re hoping you, and your fellow Liverpool aficionados can prove it was the right decision by purchasing a copy of this historic Liverpool v versus RB Leipzig matchday programme.

As well as featuring Jurgen Klopp‘s notes, his Zoom call with Julian Nagelsmann, Hendo’s notes, interviews with Sadio Mane, John Achterberg, Peter Gulacsi and musician Pixey, we also mark what would have been Joe Fagan‘s 100th birthday on March 12th. Chuck in various other features and it’s more like an A4 magazine than a matchday programme, with an absolutely boss front cover too.

Anyhow, hard-sell over. If you want a copy you can order it here and with a bit of luck – and a vast improvement in form – maybe it’ll ultimately be part of a collection that every Kopite wants come May…
