Former Reds boss linked to Socceroos

Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier is to begin talks with the Australian F.A. over taking over from Guus Hiddink as the national team coach after the World Cup.

Hiddink has taken the Socceroos into the second round of the competition in Germany, where they face Italy on Monday night. But the Dutch manager has already agreed to become coach of the Russian national team after the World Cup.

“Talks are continuing with Gerard Houllier, as they are with a number of interested parties,” said John O’Neill, chief of the Australia football federation.

“We don’t want anything to distract from what is happening on the pitch.”
