Torres on target

Summer signing Fernando Torres scored his first goal for the club this evening as the Reds beat Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua 2-0 in the Port of Rotterdam tournament.

As the pre-season campaign draws to a close, Liverpool had a comfortable game and were a goal-up thanks to Torres after just 15minutes. The Spaniard ran onto a Yossi Benayoun through ball to impressive lift the ball over the oncoming Chen Zhang in the Shanghai goal.

In addition to Torres, the game saw first starts for Sebastian Leto and Lucas Leiva, with Sami Hyypia captaining the line-up.

The second goal came from second half substitute Steven Gerrard who moved quickly on the edge of the area before lifting a delicately placed lob over the keeper to double Liverpool’s lead.

The second half also saw the introduction of Dirk Kuyt, who was given a heroes welcome by the crowd, and Ryan Babel who, as a former Ajax player, was given the villain’s welcome.

The final warm-up game before the new Premiership campaign gets underway for Rafa Benitez’s men comes on Sunday afternoon when they face Feyenoord in the tournament and the prospect of silverware.
