Rafa concedes title defeat

It looks as if Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has accepted that Manchester United will indeed win their 18th league Championship this season, despite a spirited resurgence from the Reds.

With just two league games remaining, United need only a point to secure the Premier League title and Benitez believes if it wasn’t for injury problems, namely to Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard, the title would be coming to Anfield.

He said, ‘œUnited have a strong team and a strong squad, which is important. But imagine if Gerrard and Torres had been fit all season. Where would we be now? It has been a good season, but you know it could be better.’

A report in this morning’s Times by Oliver Kay responds to Benitez’s claim:

It will be dismissed by Sir Alex Ferguson, who has been without Wes Brown and Owen Hargreaves for most of the campaign through injury.

Wes Brown and Owen Hargreaves aren’t exactly Torres and Gerrard though are they.

United face Arsenal at home on Saturday where they could clinch the title with a draw, whilst Liverpool next play West Brom away, on Sunday afternoon.

Should the Gunners gatecrash United’s title party with victory at Old Trafford, the title is likely to be decided on the final day of the season ‘“ where Liverpool face Tottenham at home and United face relegation-threatened Hull City away.
