The season starts here, with festive cheer

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva says there is no better time than Christmas to get back to winning ways and turn the Reds’ season around.

The Reds went down 2-0 at Portsmouth on Saturday to suffer their seventh Premier League defeat of the season, dropping to 8th in the table going into the festive fixture list.

But Lucas, who sees central midfield partner Javier Mascherano out through injury and suspension for the next four games, says the Reds can start to put their wrongs right with victory over Wolves on Boxing Day.

He told the club’s official web site, “It would be good and really important to finish the year (at Anfield) with a victory.

“I think we need to win almost every game now, so our target is to take each game as it comes and end the year well. Then, if we can also start the New Year with a win it will be important.

“But Wolves have quality. We have to respect them and try to show our own quality and play well for the fans.

“All games are tough in the Premier League, so we have to prepare well, work hard and have confidence. We have quality and if we can play well we can beat anyone.”

Liverpool vs Wolves gets underway at 5.30pm on Saturday, 26th December, before the Reds travel to Aston Villa on 29th December for their final game of 2009, and indeed the decade.
