With rumours having circulated of a ‘bust-up’ between manager Rafa Benitez and club captain Steven Gerrard since the Reading defeat on Wednesday, Benitez has denied any such speculation is true.

“Talk of problems in the dressing room are not true,” said the Spaniard.

“You could see the response from the players’ point. Is someone saying there is a problem with Steven Gerrard? Not true. He was here supporting the team, that says everything,” he added.

Rumours of a dressing room bust up between captain and manager at half-time were heightened when he was reported to have not travelled with the rest of the squad to Stoke on Saturday. He was, however, in the stands during the match – although local radio reported he left before the final whistle.
