Burnley 0-4 Liverpool

Football - Burnley v Liverpool Barclays Premier League

Liverpool recorded their first League win away from home of 2010 and in doing so relegated Burnley.

Second half goals from Steven Gerrard (2), Maxi Rodriguez and Ryan Babel gave Rafa Benitez’s side the points and left Brian Laws’ side with a swift return to Championship football.

With Aston Villa having won earlier in the day, a win for Liverpool could only keep them down in seventh place, but with Man City and Spurs neither winning this weekend, the door for fourth place remains open.

The opening goal arrived when Gerrard’s shot from the edge of the box took a deflection off defender Leon Cort. But there was nothing fortunate about the captain’s second, a superb effort from 25 yards.

Maxi then scored his first goal for the club since his January arrival, finishing well from an angle after a good through ball from Alberto Aquilani, who enjoyed a rare 90 minutes.

Once 3 nil up, Benitez was able to rest Gerrard and give youngster Dani Pacheco ten minute’s action. With Dirk Kuyt having limped off just after half time, forcing the manager to play Ryan Babel as forward, the young Spaniard may get more of a chance in the final 2 fixtures of the season.

Babel made it four nil in injury time.

The clean sheet means Pepe Reina is on track to win his fourth golden glove award in five seasons at the club.
