Reds boost as Torres set for return

Fernando Torres could be back in action for Liverpool next week, although is unlikely to feature in Monday night’s clash against West Ham in the Premier League.

The Spanish striker flew home to see a specialist about his ongoing knee problems, which kept him out of Sunday’s goalless draw with Fulham at Anfield.

Initial fears were that Torres could have kicked his last ball for the Reds this season, with some doubting his availability for his country in this summer’s World Cup.

But Dr Ramon Cugat is confident Torres will be back in action in time to face his former club, Atletico Madrid, in the Europa League semi-final a week on Thursday.

Cugat said, “The problem’s not serious but he needs to stop and rest to avoid more risk. But in normal circumstances, he could be ready to play next week.

“It depends how the injury settles down. The decision is now up to Liverpool’s medical staff and the manager.”

It is understood that, whilst fit to play on Monday against West Ham, Torres will be rested for the trip to the Spanish capital later in the week.
