Rafa exit latest

Reports this morning suggest that Rafa Benitez’s departure from Anfield is very imminent as the club look to strike a severance deal with the Spaniard.

Benitez signed a new five year deal just 14 months ago, meaning the total cost of the remainder of his contract is around £16m-£20m.

But the club are keen to avoid the large figures, which would not necessarily have to be paid if Benitez was to take up a job somewhere else after his exit from Merseyside. Rumours are abound that he will succeed Jose Mourinho as Inter Milan boss.

Sky Sports say Benitez’s departure will be confirmed in the next 48 hours after the boss lost the confidence of top players. Some sources suggest the club giving him a way out is a last gasp effort to keep the likes of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres at the club.

Last night, Benitez’s agent Manuel Garcia Quilon said, “We don’t know anything more than what’s being said. We’re not saying anything.”

Benitez arrived at Anfield in June 2004, winning the Champions League in his first season and the FA Cup a year later in 2006. He took charge of 350 games at LFC.
