Enrique to Liverpool ‘this week’

Liverpool will sign Newcastle‘s Jose Enrique this week, according to reports in several newspapers today.

The Spanish left-back has been linked with a move to Anfield since the end of last season and now looks to be the latest big-name to leave St. James’ Park.

Enrique, 25, has only a year remaining on his contract with the Magpies and has refused to sign a new contract. Having seen captain Kevin Nolan leave already this summer, and now fellow midfielder Joey Barton has cited the North East club’s lack of ambition, Enrique has made clear he wishes to leave too.

He made 36 appearances for Newcastle last season – they paid £6.3m for the uncapped Spaniard in 2007, a similar fee looks set to be accepted due to his contract situation.

Newcastle are resigned to losing the player and have made attempts to sign a replacement. They could even accept an offer of £5m, according to the Mirror, or as much as double that (Daily Mail).

Kenny Dalglish has been looking for a solution to the problematic left back situation since taking over in January. The Reds’ currently have Emiliano Insua, Fabio Aurelio and youngster Jack Robinson, but where forced to play Glen Johnson out of position towards the end of last season.

Last season saw Aurelio again plagued by injury problems and Insua out on loan, while Paul Konchesky left for Leicester City this summer.
