Remembering Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle ’96 and ’97

With Liverpool taking on Newcastle United in the final game of 2011 tonight at Anfield (kick-off 7.45pm), we thought we’d take a stroll down memory lane and bring you highlights of the two epic Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle games of the 1990s.

The first, in April 1996, saw a truly remarkable game. A young Robbie Fowler gave Liverpool the lead, before Les Ferdinand and David Ginola turned it round for the Magpies.

End to end football ensued and Fowler equalised with a sweet left foot shot from the edge of the area ten minutes into the second half.

Newcastle retook the lead through Faustino Asprilla, only for Stan Collymore to grab an equaliser and in the dying seconds strike home at the Kop end leaving Kevin Keegan’s men defeated and deflated.

Liverpool were 3-0 up by half time in the same fixture a year later, with goals from Steve McManaman, Patrick Berger and Fowler.

But an incredible second half comeback from Newcastle, managed at the time by one Kenny Dalglish, saw catastrophic goalkeeping by David James let in Keith Gillespie, Asprilla and Warren Barton and the visitors pulled it back to 3-3.

With just seconds remaining, and Newcastle seemingly have snatched a heroic point, Fowler popped up at the Kop end to head home a Bjornebye cross and history had repeated itself; 4-3 to the Reds.
