Liverpool must act fast to sign Newcastle’s Fabricio Coloccini

Newcastle Utd defender Fabricio Coloccini has been linked with a move to Liverpool for several months, though the club made no attempt in last month’s transfer window to sign the centre-back.

Now, Coloccini is thought to have been offered a new contract by the North East club, which would extend his current deal beyond the 18 months it has left to run.

It is understood that if Liverpool are genuinely interested in signing the 30-year-old Argentina international, they’ll have to act swiftly in the summer with Coloccini having told the Magpies he’ll make no decision on his future until then.

Liverpool have just been dealt another defensive setback with the news that Daniel Agger will be sidelined with suspected broken ribs for 6-8 weeks, although they do have Uruguayan Sebastian Coates and veteran Jamie Carragher ready to deputise.
