Reina and Johnson out of Cup tie

Liverpool will be without goalkeeper Pepe Reina and defender Glen Johnson for Wednesday night’s League Cup clash at home to Swansea City.

First team coach Mike Marsh confirmed the news on Tuesday afternoon, telling the club’s official website, “They’re both unavailable for the Swansea game. We’ll see where they are after that.”

Reina is continuing to struggle with a hamstring problem, which has seen him out of the last three Reds games, although he did return to the bench for Sunday’s Merseyside Derby draw away at Everton.

Johnson hasn’t recovered since picking up a knock in last week’s Europa League clash with Anzhi Makhachkala at Anfield.

Marsh added, “The boys have come out of the derby well and they’re all fit and strong. One or two are carrying knocks.

“We play Swansea tomorrow in the Capital One Cup and it’s a chance to rest one or two and give one or two other players a chance to get some game time.”

Liverpool vs Swansea gets underway at 8pm at Anfield on Wednesday night. Tickets are still available from the Liverpool ticket office.
