January Transfer Window Day 19 – Baggies after Coates

January Transfer Window Day 18

Here’s the latest transfer rumours and reports.

Sebastian Coates

Sebastian Coates – To West Brom (loan)

QPR are rumoured to be interested in West Brom‘s Jonas Olsson, and manager Steve Clarke is reported to want Liverpool’s Uruguayan defender as his replacement. Player and manager know each other from Clarke’s stint as Kenny Dalglish‘s assistant, and Coates seems like an ideal replacement for the big Swede.

The 22 year old defender has struggled to break up the Agger-Skrtel partnership, and with Brendan Rodgers usually preferring the experienced Jamie Carragher as third choice in Liverpool’s central defense, a loan move would be beneficial for all parties.

Coates didn’t feature in the squad for the win over Norwich on Saturday.

Federico Fazio – From Sevilla

Should Liverpool and West Brom reach an agreement for Coates, the Reds will undoubtedly need to bolster the defense. According to IBTimes Brendan Rodgers is sounding out the big Argentine, who could be available at a cut price due to Sevilla’s financial situation.

The 25 year old is enjoying a good season so far, and has also scored three goals in his 11 La Liga starts. His height and strength makes him a very useful weapon at attacking set pieces, and a rumoured price of about £3m would be a good piece of business for a player who can also be used as a holding midfielder.

And the rest:

Barcelona’s Victor Valdes’ contract expires in 18 months, and the 31 year old has now cancelled contract negotiations and informed the club about his decision to leave. Whether it happens this summer or next remains uncertain for now. The Catalan no.1 was linked with Liverpool a few days ago.

Lyon’s striker Bafetimbi Gomis has put any transfer speculation to rest after signaling his intent to stay in France. The 27 year old has been linked to Chelsea and Liverpool.

Norwegian defender Vegard Forren has signed for Southampton. The 25 year old was set to go on trial with Liverpool with a view to make a deal, but Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers decided not to follow up his interest.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s defender Danny Wilson has been loaned out to Scottish club Hearts for the rest of the season.
