Liverpool are preparing a £12 million bid for highly rated Schalke centre-back Kyriakos Papadopoulos, according to Wednesday’s Liverpool Echo.
The Reds are on the look out for a new defender following Jamie Carragher’s retirement.
The 21-year-old 6ft Greek international signed with the Bundesliga giants from Olympiakos for around £4.6million in 2010, and has since made 57 league appearances for the North-West club.
The Echo say of Papadopoulos:
Physically strong, comfortable in possession and dominant in the air, Papadopoulos has jumped above Swansea City‘s Ashley Williams and Ajax’s Toby Alderweireld on the club’s wish list of centre-backs.
However, Schalke are hopeful Papadopoulos will stay with the club, who secured qualification for the Champions League with victory over Freiburg on the final day of the Bundesliga season on Saturday.
The Reds are also eyeing Manchester City defender Kolo Toure.
The 32-year-old is available on a free transfer this summer and it is thought he will speak to Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool’s officials on his return from City’s post-season tour in America.
Liverpool have also been linked with a move for Swansea’s Ashley Williams, however the price tag of around £12million may put Rodgers off, considering his age of 28.
