Report: Mohamed Salah set for Liverpool medical

Basel winger Mohamed Salah will fly in for a medical at Melwood this week to complete a £10 million switch to Liverpool, according to reports this evening.

UPDATE: Chelsea join Salah bidding – latest here

Salah has been the subject of reports linking him with a move to Merseyside for some time, and with just eight days left of the January transfer window, the Reds may be hoping to push through a deal swiftly.

According to English language Egyptian football website, King Tut, which has been the source of several accurate stories on the Salah to Liverpool speculation before, the Egyptian should be unveiled as a Liverpool player by next week.

The website writes:

Two days ago, Newcastle United were also reportedly considering to hijack the Salah deal from Liverpool. However, according to a KingFut.com source close to the player, the Egyptian winger is expected at Melwood tomorrow as a £10million fee has been agreed between Liverpool and the Swiss champions.

On Wednesday afternoon, odds of the 21-year-old joining Liverpool dropped to 1/6 with several bookmakers.

UPDATE: An updated report states Salah will have his medical on Friday. Either way, the deal looks imminent.

Earlier this week, several major media outlets revealed Liverpool were “ready to make a bid” for the 21-year-old.

Salah would be the first Egyptian to play for Liverpool should he complete a move from the Swiss champions.

This Is Anfield’s Henry Jackson brought us a scouting report on Salah earlier this month, and described how he would fit into Brendan Rodgers’ team. He wrote:

The African is probably at his most natural in the ‘inverted winger’ position on the right- the term given for playing on the opposite side to your stronger foot, like Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery – drifting inside onto his wand of a left foot.

Liverpool this week learned of the extent of Lucas Leiva‘s latest injury setback, which may force their hand into looking for a central defensive midfielder before the transfer window closes on January 31st.

Opinion: Liverpool need reinforcements, but not in attack
