New Liverpool signing Joe Gomez has noted the improvement he’s made after just a week in training at Melwood, following his move from Charlton Athletic.

The step up from Championship football with Charlton Athletic to life at Liverpool is a big one, and new Reds centre-back Joe Gomez said he is “learning a lot” after his first week in training.

Gomez joined in a £3.5 million deal this summer after impressing at The Valley last season.

Just 18 years old and with no top-flight experience, Gomez says he has already improved with the higher quality of coaching on Merseyside.

“I’ve enjoyed it. It’s a step up and I’ve probably learned more this week than I have in a while,” he said.

“That’s down to the top-quality coaches and players.

“Straight away, you can see the change in intensity – high tempo and you’ve always got to be focused.

“It’s teaching me little things. It’s a lot more technical. I’m learning a lot.”

The versatile defender feels he has settled in well at Liverpool, and he noted the influence of members of Rodgers’ squad at both ends of the experience spectrum in aiding his transition.

“I’ve spoken to Jordon [Ibe] and Andre [Wisdom] quite a bit,” Gomez continued.

“On the pitch, [Martin] Skrtel and Kolo [Toure] have been good.

“Everyone has been welcoming, the whole team.”

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia, Gomez said he was “looking forward to the challenge.”

“It’s obviously a new experience for me, this level is a lot different to what I was playing at last season,” he said. “But I’m just enjoying it and hoping to do well.

“I don’t think it has quite settled in yet. When we were coming on and seeing the plane, it was a ‘wow’ moment.

“The most important thing is that I try to do well on the pitch.

“I’ve heard a lot about how big the club is, and obviously I know. But coming out on a tour like this will show me first-hand how big it is.

“It’s quite easy for me to take it in but not let it affect me.”

Gomez will be hoping to feature as Liverpool kick off their four-game tour by taking on the True Thai Premier League All Stars on Tuesday.
