Reports: Liverpool tracking PSG left-back Lucas Digne

Liverpool could be set to continue their summer of spending with a move for Paris Saint-Germain left-back Lucas Digne, reports claim.

Brendan Rodgers could add to his Liverpool ranks with a move for Paris Saint-Germain’s wantaway left-back Lucas Digne, reports on Wednesday claim.

Dominic King of the Mail suggests the Frenchman could be brought in to compete with Alberto Moreno.

“It is unclear whether Liverpool would look to pursue a loan or permanent deal for Digne, who has been linked with Atletico Madrid and Roma, but the France international has been discussed as an option,” King writes.

“Though Joe Gomez, the £3.5m acquisition form Charlton, has impressed as a left-back on Liverpool’s tour of South East Asia and Australia, it remains to be seen whether he would be ready for a full campaign in the Barclays Premier League in that position.

Alberto Moreno would be regarded as Liverpool’s first choice left-back, following his £12m arrival from Sevilla last year.

“But he endured a difficult first campaign in England and he has had some minor fitness issues since reporting back to training.”

Moreno spent the majority of 2014/15 under little pressure for his starting role at Liverpool, with Jose Enrique facing fitness issues, along with an overriding paucity of quality.

King continues: “Jose Enrique is free to leave if Liverpool receive an offer for the Spaniard, who only has 12 months remaining on his contract.

“His status has been made clear by the fact he has remained on Merseyside, along with Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini, while the rest of the squad have travelled.

“Rodgers has always said that he wants competition for places and should they step up their pursuit of Digne, the 22-year-old, Liverpool – who have added six new faces so far this window – would effectively have two options for every position.”

King’s report contradicts suggestions that Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke will be the Reds’ last signing of the summer.

Benteke is set to join new arrivals James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, Nathaniel Clyne, Joe Gomez and Roberto Firmino in Rodgers’ squad, with a £32.5 million clinched.

The signing of Digne would be a sensible move for Liverpool.

Moreno struggled for consistency in 2014/15, and while Gomez has impressed at left-back during pre-season, the 18-year-old has little experience of the role.

Digne was confirmed to have asked for a move away from Paris on Monday.

He made just 15 Ligue 1 appearances last season, but is a strong defensive full-back who is comfortable in possession and happy to drive forward to support attacks.

At just 22, he boasts four seasons of experience in the French top flight, having starred for Lille before his £10.5 million move to PSG in 2013.
