Rumour Mill: Joao Carlos Teixeira agrees deal with Porto

Portuguese midfielder Joao Carlos Teixeira has reportedly agreed a deal to sign for Porto this summer.

The 23-year-old’s contract expires this summer, and although he has been offered a new deal at Liverpool, he will leave the club on a free contract.

Teixeira’s last start was at West Ham in the FA Cup back in February, and his last appearance was as sub vs. Augsburg later that month.

Since then he’s only featured as an unused sub once, with his move away this summer an inevitability.

He signed for the club from Sporting Lisbon for an initial £830,000 in 2012, but has struggled to nail down a first-team place in recent years.

Both the player and manager Jurgen Klopp have previously spoke of the need for him to be playing regular football now.

“I like Joao. As a person, as a footballer,” said Klopp in January.

“But of course, players like him need matches, and if you can’t get it then you have to leave.”

Having barely featured since then, Teixeira has been linked with moves to Huddersfield Town in the Championship, and Serie A side Fiorentina.

A move to a non-English club would see Liverpool receive only £250,000 compensation, which is also the case with Jordan Rossiter moving to Scottish side Rangers.

A move to a club in England would see the fee decided by tribunal, which is expected to be the case with Jerome Sinclair’s move to Watford.

Teixeira has made eight appearances for the club in total, scoring once. He was handed his debut by Brendan Rodgers at Fulham in February 2014 before a successful season on loan at Brighton was ended abruptly by a broken leg.

Portuguese paper A Bola report he has agreed a five-year deal with Porto.
