Philippe Coutinho could miss Stoke trip due to illness

Jurgen Klopp has explained that Philippe Coutinho is still ill and therefore could miss the match at Stoke on Saturday.

The Reds’ influential attacker was substituted against Bournemouth after feeling sick, and hasn’t been at Melwood on Thursday or Friday due to the illness.

Klopp explained on Friday at his pre-match press conference: “Phil is still ill. He wasn’t in Melwood yesterday or today.

“[It] doesn’t look too good for tomorrow. We will give him all the time he needs. It will be close.”

With Klopp also confirming that Sadio Mane will require surgery on his knee injury – therefore ruling him out for the rest of the season, it’s another huge blow to Liverpool’s hopes.

Between them, Mane and Coutinho have scored 22 goals so far this season.

Losing Coutinho would mean a huge switch in Klopp’s attack – with options including moving James Milner into a wide position, or bringing Alberto Moreno, Trent Alexander-Arnold or Ben Woodburn.
