Liverpool to play Spartak Moscow, Sevilla and Maribor in Champions League group stage

Liverpool have been drawn against Spartak Moscow, Sevilla and Maribor in the group stage of the Champions League.

The Reds have returned to Europe’s top-tier tournament for the first time since 2014, after a top-four finish in the Premier League and a play-off win over Hoffenheim.

Their 6-3 aggregate victory against the Bundesliga hopefuls sealed Jurgen Klopp‘s side a place in the group stage draw on Thursday evening.

And the ceremony in Monaco pits Liverpool against Spartak, Sevilla and Maribor.

Klopp will take charge of his first Champions League game as Reds manager on September 12/13, with the rest of the group fixtures spread out over September, October, November and December.

Liverpool last played Spartak in the group stage of the Champions League in 2002, with Gerard Houllier’s side winning 3-1 away and 5-0 at home.

Sevilla were victors in the Europa League final against Klopp’s side in 2016, providing Liverpool with an opportunity for revenge.

And finally, the Reds are yet to meet Maribor in action, with the Slovenian powerhouse’s last appearance in the Champions League proper coming in 2014/15.
