Liverpool recovered from an early deficit to secure a thrilling 3-1 win over Southampton, and fans were full of praise for the Reds’ show of character.
Southampton 1-3 Liverpool
Premier League, St Mary’s
April 5, 2019
Goals: Long 9′; Keita 36′, Salah 80′, Henderson 86′
The Reds secured another three valuable points in a tight and tense tussle on the south coast, coming from a goal behind to return to the Premier League summit.
A lacklustre opening to the game from Jurgen Klopp‘s side saw the Saints take advantage through Shane Long, but Naby Keita‘s first goal for the club ensured scores were level at half-time.
A fierce battle ensued in the second half as the Reds pushed for the winner, with a devastating counter-attack sealing the win as Mohamed Salah netted his 50th league goal for the club.
Jordan Henderson then added the extras on the cusp of full-time to see Liverpool return to Merseyside with a hard-fought win.
Here’s how supporters reacted to the result on social media and on our forums.
Keita & Alexander-Arnold were praised for their role in the equaliser…
Not a bad time to score your first goal for Liverpool…

What a moment for Naby Keita. Finally off the mark for #LFC and it's a massive goal in the title race. Reds nowhere near their best so far but back on level terms on the South Coast.
— James Pearce (@JamesPearceLFC) April 5, 2019
Really happy for Naby, I think it’s obvious he’s struggled and not settled personally as much as anything else. Confidence player, I hope that gives him it. Still think he’ll be great next season. #LFC

Some cross that from Trent Alexander-Arnold #SOULIV
— James Nalton (@JDNalton) April 5, 2019
Absolutely delighted that he scored but are we allowed to talk about Keita defensively?
Runners off him every time.
We need to tighten up in midfield 2nd half! #SOULIV #LFC

Trent's persistence and quality turning what looked like a lost chance into a much-needed equaliser for Liverpool.

Klopp’s substitutions were lauded as Henderson and Milner turned the game…
Some Liverpool fans do not deserved Henderson and Milner. Turned the game on its head.
‘Brexit Midfield’.

Inspired substitutions by Klopp. Milner and Henderson turned the game for Liverpool and the skipper gets just rewards. Brilliant!

“Klopp’s in game management is fcking brilliant. Hendo has been intense since he’s been on.”

Kudos to #Klopp for making the subs at the right time. #LFC

“Hendo and Milner brought stability. Great use of subs. And what a Captain’s performance! Hendo deserves a lot of the credit today!”
– Ole Kreuzeberg on Facebook.
Deserved goal for Henderson. Changed the tone since he came on and now has an assist and a goal to show for it #SOULIV
— James Nalton (@JDNalton) April 5, 2019
In bits. Jordan Henderson changed the game.

Salah’s stunning counter-attack goal had fans in raptures…
836mins between goals. Worth the fucking wait

When the ball fell to Salah (60 odd yards from goal) I thought, Southampton are in trouble here. He hadn’t played well. His pace was expected. The finish that followed wasn’t necessarily. The shirt off in the celebration shows what it means. Liverpool keep answering questions.

MO SALAH YOU LITTLE DANCER!
— Andrew Beasley (@BassTunedToRed) April 5, 2019
The most fitting goal Salah could score. #LFC’s title hopes on the line & he delivers a sublime finish, the fastest player in the club’s history to reach 50 goals. All of that in a season where he’s been constantly told he’s not been good enough. Talk about silencing critics.

And the result was another testament to Liverpool’s mentality & character as the title charge continues…
This Liverpool aren't scared of working hard and then working harder. This Liverpool provides answers. This Liverpool finds ways. This Liverpool believe in themselves. This Liverpool doesn't give in or give up. This Liverpool do not want to go away. What a Liverpool this is!

Regardless how this turns out, I will never, ever, ever question the character of this team. Incredible.

Huge, huge win. They may or may not win this league but Liverpool are giving themselves every chance. Three games in a row needed a late winner and have come up with the goods every time. Another immense show of resilience under enormous pressure.
— Joel Rabinowitz (@joel_archie) April 5, 2019
For a team that were supposedly cracking under the pressure, #LFC’s mentality is hugely impressive. Another night when the title challenge could’ve faltered but the impact of Henderson and Milner was huge and that moment of magic from Salah could prove to be a massive moment pic.twitter.com/7Q1rwPNGey
— Benjamin Smith (@BSmith) April 5, 2019
What an absolutely incredible #LFC team this is: quality, character, the lot. If Manchester City want this title, they're going to have to win a lot of games to clinch it.
— David Lynch (@davidlynchlfc) April 5, 2019
Aw mates, The Reds mean business don’t they?
David Silva and the boys sat at home watching on sky while Liverpool keep answering questions. FIVE TO GO

My god . Never doubt. Never stop. Never stop.

Feels like destiny you know, I’m fighting back tears at the moment
