Agger was signed in January 2006 after helping Brondby to win the Danish league in 2005. Costing £5.8 million, Agger is the most expensive defender to join Liverpool. He is a much-needed reinforcement in central defence and his skilful, left-footed passes give Liverpool an improvement in ball distribution from the back. Liverpool great Jan Molby has rated Agger as being calm and a good reader of the game, which brings comparisons with Alan Hansen to mind.
The start of season 2006-07 saw the Dane finally begin to show his class with impressive performances against Chelsea in the Charity Shield win in August and in Europe vs Maccabi Haifa, an injury to Jamie Carragher saw Agger partner Sami Hyypia in defence and on August 26th he scored his first goal for the club on the 100 year anniversary of The Kop - a stunning 30 yard strike into the top corner at the Kop end, which was subsequently voted Match of the Day’s Goal of the Month and Liverpool’s best goal that season.
Agger is kown for his calm attitude and his ability to bring the ball forward comfortably, drawing many comparisons to former red Alan Hansen.
In his first full season at the club (2006-07), he formed a successful partnership with Jamie Carragher, keeping out Sami Hyypia for much of the season. This season also saw him score crucial goals in the League Cup against Birmingham and, most memorably, in the Champions League semi-final against Chelsea as the Reds progressed to Athens on penalties.
After such a successful season, he missed almost the entire 2007-2008 season due to a reccuring metatarsal injury. Having regained fitness for the 2008-2009 season, he has stated ‘”I am almost starting my career at Liverpool all over again”.
