Liverpool signed Swiss international defender Philipp Degen from Borussia Dortmund on 3rd July 2008. He had been out of contract at Dortmund, and chose to leave the Bundesliga club for Liverpool after 3 seasons in Germany, where he made 68 appearances, scoring a single goal.
Degen plays as a right back, but is known for his attacking support play down the right wing. He had previously played for youth side FC Oberdorf as well as FC Aarau on loan, but his career really took off at FC Basel, where he won three Swiss League titles in the same team as his twin brother, David, who still plays for Basel.
He made his international debut in 2005, and his since gone on to earn 29 caps for the Swiss national side. He played in every game of Switzerland’s 2006 World Cup campaign, and was part of the defence that didn’t concede a goal in the entire tournament. He was also selected in the squad for Euro 2008, but after an injury hit season he failed to make an appearance for the host nation.
