For the love of the… money

It used to be that footballers joined new clubs for the love of the game; to win trophies, to play regular football, to play at a higher standard or in a new league, for a new challenge.

But in this modern era it isn’t so and therefore it leaves Blackburn defender Lucas Neill to sum up the greed of players these days with his decision to move to relegation threatened West Ham instead of playing in the Champions League with Liverpool.

The Australian defender was wanted as cover at right back and centre of defence and the Reds had agreed terms with Blackburn, only for Neill to opt for the Hammers after they offered him 50k a week and we refused to match it.

It says a lot about a players ambition when he has played for Millwall and Blackburn then when given the opportunity to move to Liverpool and play in the Champions League, he chooses West Ham and a relegation dogfight.

Rafa Benitez is now set to turn his attentions elsewhere in particular to find cover for Steve Finnan at right; Roberto Ayala of Valencia looks like the main target now, with a loan deal possible initially. Fulham‘s Liam Rosenior was mentioned before and could be back in the rumour mill this week.

All the transfer rumours are here in the rumour mill.
