Xabi Alonso is beating Steven Gerrard to the title of the fans’ player of the year by the narrowest of margins.

A poll on This Is Anfield is asking fans for their Liverpool player of the year and as it stands, Alonso has 45% of your votes, to Gerrard’s 44%.

Alonso has enjoyed arguably his best season yet for the Reds after consistently being linked with a move away from Anfield last summer, amidst the Gareth Barry transfer saga.

Gerrard meanwhile has scored 24 goals and been inspiration in Liverpool’s title challenge. If it weren’t for injuries, no doubt Gerrard would have been in even more impressive form this campaign.

Other nominees are Dirk Kuyt (8%) and Pepe Reina (1%), whilst 2% of fans believe the accolade belongs to someone else.
