It’s fair to say that reports today claiming Liverpool are confident of signing centre back Ashley Williams this summer have been met with little enthusiasm.
All the major media outlets – Guardian, Telegraph, Daily Mail, Mirror – today run the story that Liverpool are “confident of signing Ashley Williams from Swansea City“.
It is reported that Rodgers will persuade owners FSG to sign the player despite his age – he turns 29 in August – and the price of £12m, thus fighting off interest from Arsenal, who bid £9m in January.
While Williams may not be the only centre back arriving at Anfield this summer, his experience is touted as a key factor in Rodgers pursuit of the Welshman – despite Williams having only played in the Premier League for two seasons.
If FSG do indeed allow Rodgers to sign Williams, it would be a turnaround after they refused to pay half that fee for 29 year old Clint Dempsey last summer.
Here’s just a sample of tweets:
@thisisanfield If that’s the price we should walk away at least £5m too much. Swansea must be laughing their heads off. Far better out there

@thisisanfield good player but not worth £12m, Williams, Siggurdsen, Allen, Borini. Has he no scouts?

@thisisanfield £12m for a 28 year old with little top flight experience?!? Scary if true
