Ajax coach Frank de Boer has dropped a big hint that Liverpool have made an approach for highly rated playmaker Christian Eriksen, but has warned the 21-year-old against joining the Reds.
Liverpool are in the transfer market for a new creative and attacking minded midfielder, after missing out on Armenian international Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Borussia Dortmund last week.
Eriksen has long been linked with a move to Anfield, and could be availabale for around £12million.
De Boer spoke to a Dutch newspaper directly about Eriksen’s speculation with Liverpool, mentioning no other club, but said he didn’t think Eriksen would benefit from a switch to Anfield.
“If Liverpool go back to really good possession play,” the former Dutch international told Algemeen Dagblad, with quotes translated by the Mirror. “It can be a success for Christian. But it does mean that their entire way of playing has to change. It is up to Christian what he wants. If he feels good going to Liverpool anyway, then it is up to him.
“But we realise that the interest in this kind of player is huge. And I can also understand that he wants to make another step in his career. I can’t stop him.”
Adding to that speculation this morning is the Sunday People’s report that Brendan Rodgers has now made Eriksen and his teammate in Amsterdam, defender Toby Alderweirald, his top priority targets for the summer.
They report:
Liverpool want to clinch a £22million double deal for Ajax stars Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld while Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand is also on their radar.
Meanwhile, Liverpool kick started their pre-season schedule of friendlies with an impressive 4-0 victory over Preston yesterday.
New signings Simon Mignolet, Kolo Toure, Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas got a run out, whilst Aspas made it a goalscoring debut. Full match report here.
