Talks between Liverpool and AC Milan over the signing of Italian international striker Mario Balotelli have “moved on” during the course of Wednesday afternoon, according to a journalist.

The Telegraph‘s John Percy writes:

Balotelli’s club, AC Milan, are understood to have been made aware of Liverpool’s interest via a third party and the striker is now emerging as an alternative target after the Merseyside club grew frustrated in their ambitious pursuit of Radamel Falcao.

Percy writes that Liverpool would prefer a loan move for Balotelli, but Milan are looking to offload the enigmatic Italian international.

The Times’ Tony Barrett says talks are ongoing, but a permanent move for the 24-year-old to Anfield could be on the cards.

Although Balotelli has been linked with the Reds throughout the summer, even forcing Brendan Rodgers to deny the club’s interest in him earlier this month, there appears to have been significant developments this week.

On Wednesday morning we reported that Italian media were suggesting a £17.5 million bid for Balotelli from Liverpool was imminent.

Sportmediaset believed the Liverpool were looking to take the former Manchester City forward on loan with a view to a permanent transfer.

Later on Wednesday AC Milan club administrator Adriano Galliani told Gazzetta dello Sport refuted the claims of Liverpool’s bid, but mysteriously added, “We will see as the transfer market ends on September 1.”

Should Liverpool secure a move for Balotelli, it would surely be a signing that would divide opinion amongst fans.

Possessing great footballing talent and a natural goalscoring finish, a series of incidents at his former clubs has landed Balotelli’s reputation in hot water.

Balotelli has scored 13 goals in 33 international appearances for Italy, scoring 14 goals in 30 Serie A appearances for Milan last season.
