Well that was an absolutely miserable afternoon to be a Liverpool fan, wasn’t it?

It was a performance that simply never got going for Brendan Rodgers’ side, with United bossing proceedings immediately from kick-off.

Steven Gerrard‘s moment of madness just seconds after coming was a horrible way for the skipper to end his final match against United, but more importantly it damaged his team’s chance of getting back into the game greatly.

Juan Mata expertly-taken double gave Louis van Gaal’s side victory, and although Daniel Sturridge pulled one back after 69 minutes, a draw never really looked on the cards.

The defeat leaves Liverpool five points adrift of United now, and their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League look extremely slim.

Here’s how social media reacted to the crucial loss, both during and after the game:

It’s a sad state of affairs that I’m now glad Gerrard won’t be able to play our next few games. The best I can say about his impact on this game was that after he went off United thought they were safe and lowered their play a bit which allowed us back into it.

When Gerrard did that and Mata scored his second, looked like an absolute nightmare of a day. But we showed fight and at 2-1 we looked the most likely to score.

We were well beaten to be honest, but still games change in moments had Lallana scored it would have 1-1 after a dire first half. Then Gerrard is a fool and the game is gone. But up to then our midfield was none existent, Sturridge was isolated for long long periods and the defensive weakness of Moreno was shown.
