Spanish media link Liverpool with improbable move for Karim Benzema

With the transfer window set to shut in less than a week, the odd unlikely rumour is to be expected—such as a move for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.

Liverpool are the preferred destination for the French striker in the eyes of club president Florentino Perez, claim Diario Gol.

The report suggests Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal and the Reds are all in the market for the Madrid No. 9, and are all prepared to pay upward of €90 million—but Perez thinks he could get a full €100m out of the Anfield coffers.

Quite why Benzema would want to give up his starting role at the Santiago Bernabeu, where he won La Liga, the Champions League and the Club World Cup last season, isn’t clear—though a move for Kylian Mbappe is mentioned.

Of course, Mbappe now seems to be on the verge of switching Monaco for PSG, which would in turn leave Real Madrid with absolutely nobody bearing the No. 9 shirt, save for a last-ditch move into the market.

While Benzema has been a top-tier forward for some time, he didn’t have his best campaign in 16/17, eclipsed in goalscoring rate within his team by the now-departed Alvaro Morata.

Perhaps Reds fans would take him nonetheless, even given how well the front three have started the season at Anfield, but it’s not likely to be a rumour that supporters should waste too much energy on watching the development of.
