Argentinian left back Insua’s loan move to Liverpool from Boca Juniors was made permanent as part of the deal which saw Gabriel Paletta go in the opposite direction. He made two appearances for the Reds at the end of the 07/08 season, away to Portsmouth and Fulham before his 18 month loan was permanent in summer 2007.
Since then, Insúa made a few appearances at the end of the season of 2006/2007 and 2007/2008. Other than that, he has been first choice left back for the reserves ever since he joined.
Following the matches at the end of 2007/2008, Insúa said that he is hungry for more and he said:
“It was really good to be part of a young team which won something at Anfield because we all know what a special place this is. I was lucky enough to play there for the first team against Manchester City and that has made me hungry for more. There are a lot of good young players at Liverpool and we all want the same thing – to play for the first team. I have done that but I want to do it more and more. The challenge for me now is to become a regular in the first team squad.”
He was a regular in the Argentine under 20 team helping the team win the under 20-world cup in 2007, 2 years younger than the rest of the squad. He was also on the back up list for the Olympics of 2008.
In July, Insúa put pen to paper on a new three year Anfield deal.
For the season of 2008/2009, Insua has been awarded with the number 22 shirt and is expected to compete with Dossena and Aurelio for the left back place.
