Kirkland to leave in summer

Goalkeeper Chris Kirkland has been told he will be sold by Liverpool this summer, according to the player himself. Kirkland has been on loan to West Brom this season, but again has been dogged by injuries and this week broke his finger to rule him out for the season – and the World Cup.

Kirkland said “I’m going back to Liverpool now but I’ve been told by them that they are going to sell me in the summer.

“This injury, therefore, has come at a pretty bad time.

“But what I will say is, however takes a chance on me in the summer will see how hard I work and how much I want to play.

“It all depends who comes in for me now. Hopefully West Brom will be one of those teams. I’ve just got to assess all the options open to me and take it from there.”

The 6ft 5inch keeper was signed by Gerard Houllier from Coventry for £6m back in 2001, he has made 45 appearances (25 league) and his current contract expires in 2009.

The former England under-21 was tipped to become England’s number one but injuries have hugely hampered his career, and despite making several squads he has yet to earn full international honours.
