Sven to ‘axe Carra and Crouch’

Sven Goran Eriksson looks likely to drop Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher from the starting line-up, replacing him at right-back with Bayern Munich’s Owen Hargreaves for England’s Cup Second Round clash with Ecuador.

Striker Peter Crouch could also be out of the team in favour of Wayne Rooney, who has just recovered from a broken metatarsal. The BBC reports that Eriksson may play a 4-5-1 formation with Rooney on his own up front.

The Swedish manager is also likely to bring in Michael Carrick to the midfield, pushing Hargreaves to right-back and relegating Carragher to the substitutes bench.

England’s only other injury doubt is defender Rio Ferdinand who suffered a groin injury during the 2-2 draw with Sweden on Tuesday night. Arsenal‘s Sol Campbell is expected to step in to partner John Terry in central defence.
